Joe was preceded in death by wife: Dorothy Mae (Hubbard) Hall, son: Joey Michael Hall, stepson: Nicholas, parents: Joe Clinton Hall and Hazel (Thompson) Hall, brothers: Andy and Herman Hall of Greenback, and special friend: Richard Stooksbury. Nellie Louise Broyles

Nellie L. Broyles, lovingly known as Grandma and Nana to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully in her home on September 4, 2026, at the age of 92.

Nellie spent much of her life in Rockford and Maryville, Tennessee, where she built a life centered around hard work, faith, and, most importantly, her family. She was a longtime member of Unity Christian Church, where her faith and love for others were an important part of her life. She was a woman who was spunky, strong-willed, generous and loved her people with all her heart.

She was happiest when she was doing something for the people she loved and spending quality time with her family. She showed her love through cooking and baking, especially her beloved sweet treats and her famous chicken and dumplings at Christmas.

Nellie’s greatest legacy, however, was the love she poured into her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her children, Vernon Kyle (Diane) Broyles and Randy Broyles; her grandchildren, Shannon (Christi) Broyles, Aaron (Morgan) Broyles, Ryan Broyles, Laura (Josh) Trentham; and her great-grandchildren, Levi and Josie Trentham, and Jack and Riley Broyles.

She also leaves behind many cherished family members who held a special place in her heart, including her niece Carol (Dennis) Bettis; great-niece Jenny Berry; great-nephews Justin and Jake Bettis; niece Linda (A.B.) McTeer, and former daughter-in-law Mary Pryor, as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Thurman “Jack” Broyles; her parents, Jake and Beulah Berry; her siblings, including her very close sister, Bonnie Morton, and nephew James Berry.

Nellie was one of a kind, and she will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Wayne Bruce “Big Bruce” Evans Sr., age 58, passed away on September 3, 2026. He was born on January 3, 1968, in Maryville, Tennessee, to the late Pink Shuman Evans and L.V. Evans. Bruce was a hardworking, private man who was quiet by nature and lived life on his own terms. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting, camping, and spending time at the family farm in Murphy, North Carolina. The farm was a place he enjoyed throughout his life, and he spent time there hunting and camping with family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pink Shuman and L.V. Evans, and his siblings, Francis Pearl Watson, Shuman Gay Evans, Kenneth Ray Evans, and Glen Harold Evans. Margaret Hatcher Brewer, aged 74, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, just two days shy of her 75th birthday. Born on September 4, 1951, Margaret lived a life defined by warmth, kindness, and devotion to her family and community. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew her. Her steady grace, generous heart, and unwavering strength leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of those she touched. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, April Brewer Wilson (d. November 7, 2019). Margaret is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, James Allen Brewer; her children, Brandy Sudderth, Tanya Sellers, and James Brewer; her sister, Lillian Hatcher Galloway of Angier, North Carolina; all of her cherished grandbabies, with a special place in her heart for Noah and Sadie, who were especially close to her; as well as her extended family, loved ones, and many dear friends who will forever honor her memory.

Jeri Emery (Kelley) passed away at home on August 30th, 2026, unexpectantly. She just couldn't live without Dolly Parton in the world. She had an infectious laugh and a smile that always reached her eyes. She had a huge heart filled with love for everyone she met. Jeri lived her life to the fullest extent, the way she wanted to. She was a collector of the weird and unusual - the worn and unloved. Jeri had found a new love for paddleboarding and enjoyed chasing sunrises and sunsets. She lived life fiercely and authentically. You always felt her light shining brightly in everything she did. Jeri leaves behind a wonderful family that loved her deeply. She was adored by her husband, Seth Haney and children Evin, Ava, HattieRue and her unofficially adopted son, Jordan (and several other children) - they will move forward with their days a little less bright. Her sister and best friend - Ruby (Mindy), parents - David & Debra, and many other family and friends she loved with all her being. Wilfred Layton Moody was born at home in Loudon County, Tennessee, on April 29, 1940. The son of the late Layton and Ruby Dunlap Moody, he passed away on August 25, 2026, at Liberty Assisted Living in Maryville, TN. Wilfred was a charter member of the 43:19 Ministries Church on 3rd Street in Maryville. He was the devoted husband of Sheree Lynn Moody for 44 years, and in those 44 years they shared many adventures together, traveling to many countries and all over the United States and Canada. Wilfred was the father to his children, Cheryl Ann Moody and husband Gary Smith, Payth and wife Kathy Moody, Stephanie and husband John Borden, and special friend and caregiver, Michelle Rex. Wilfred was also papaw to Ashley Moody, Elizabeth and Reese Borden. He was preceded in death by his sister Gail Moody Satterfield, mother in law- Virginia Boring Key, daughter- Cheryl Moody, father in law- William Don Cooper, brother in law -William Donnie Cooper and brother in law-Harold Carpenter. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Moody; brother-in-law, Ivan Satterfield; brother and sister-in-law, Pastor David and Brenda Gail Cooper; sisters-in-law, Kay Carpenter and Kathy Cooper; and in-laws Mary Cooper and Bill Key. He is also survived by his best friends Doug & Cheri Dubey, Mike & Laura Burnet, Tim & Pam Stinnett, Pastor Dale and Teresa Buchanan, Pastor David and Gail Cooper, and Pat and Alton Hamblett of Virginia. Wilfred was a 1958 graduate of Friendsville High School and then enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served his country for 8 years in Vietnam and Alaska. He returned to Friendsville in 1966, where he began his career with the US Postal Service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In 1988, he gave his heart to Jesus at South Haven Church of God. Wilfred was a pillar of his church. He loved serving his church and was dedicated to serving as a deacon and head greeter for 25 years.

He was born June 10,1943, in Blount County, TN, a son of the late Irene Smith Headrick and Harvey Headrick. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister: Virginia Ruth, and brothers: Don, Wayne, Ray and Johnny. Ervil is survived by his loving wife of 48 years: Myra Braden, daughters: Sheena Headrick Smith and Sarah Leann Headrick, son-in-law: Chad Smith, and family friend: Justin Taylor, grandsons: Anthony Smith, Kado Smith, Cyrus Smith, and great grandchildren: Bryan Smith and Opal Smith. For over 35 years Ervil served in the US Air National Guard at McGee Tyson Airbase. He owned Headrick’s Junkyard for 47 years helping his community. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church since birth but often visiting Old Piney and several more.

Macolm Inman passed away unexpectedly, August 7, 2026, at Blount Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his infectious laugh and willingness to help anybody when needed. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and driving. He was a graduate of Walland High School and worked 34 years until retirement at Vulcan Materials. Malcolm was predeceased by his parents: Stanley Inman and Betty Buchanan, and brother: Shan Inman. He leaves behind his soulmate and loving wife of 28 years: Betty Garland Inman, precious daughter: Amy (Angela), sons: Tyler and Josh, stepchildren: Jimmy (Misty) and Steven Gooden, granddaughter Avery, step-grandchildren: JJ and Chase, sisters: Macheala (Tony), Jeanette (David), brother: Porky (Kim), several nieces and nephews, best friends: Jeff Robertson, and brother-in-law: Troy Garland to mourn his passing. Bill was preceded in death by his parents William Robert Dorn, Sr. and Betty Jo Dorn. Bill is survived by his beloved wife Linda Dorn and daughter Stephanie Hayes, and grandson Jesse Hayes. Devoted longtime friends Harold and Pat Humphrey. Bill found great happiness outdoors at Alcoa Duck Pond, while fishing and fellowshipping with friends. Bill was under the care of UT Hospice Care. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to UT Hospice for their compassionate care and support. Michael Anthony Lane, age 47, of Maryville, Tennessee, passed away on August 4, 2026. Michael was born on January 8, 1979, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Sandra Lane and the late Kenneth Rasar. Michael was a devoted husband to his wife, Shannon Orr Lane, with whom he shared over 26 years of marriage, and a loving father to his only son, Noah Lane. His family meant more to him than anything, and those who knew Michael knew him as a good, hardworking man who would do anything he could for anyone in need. Michael worked at Rough House Athletics, where he was the kind of man who did whatever needed to be done. Hard work was simply a part of who he was, both on the job and throughout his life. Outside of work, Michael loved being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and searching the woods for morel mushrooms. Of all the places he went, none meant more to him than Cades Cove, his favorite place in the world. Most importantly, during the final months of his life, Michael gave his life to Jesus Christ and was baptized. In the days preceding his passing, he expressed his faith and assurance that he knew where he was going. His family takes great comfort in knowing that Michael left this life with the confidence that he was going home to Heaven. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Rasar; his grandmother, Alice Lane; and Leevane Orr. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Shannon Lane; his son, Noah Lane; his mother, Sandra Lane; his uncles, Jimmy Lane, Bobby Lane, and Rick Lane; as well as several beloved cousins, extended family members, and friends who will deeply miss him. Michael’s life was far too short, but the measure of his life cannot be found simply in the number of years he was given. It can be found in the family he loved, the work he did, the people he helped, and the memories he leaves behind. He was a hardworking man, a devoted husband, a loving father, and someone who could always be counted on. His family will miss him beyond words, but they grieve with the hope that his final goodbye was not truly goodbye.

Janice Marie Miller Everett - beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend - arose each morning at 5:00 AM to read her Bible and pray to the Lord she loved with all her heart. Following a catastrophic accident on the last day of July, on the morning of August 1, 2026, at 5:00 AM, while her dear husband held her hand in his, she departed this earth to worship her Savior face to face. Left to grieve her absence and cherish her memory are her husband of 24 years, Ronny Everett; daughter Wendi Walker; son Chad Davis (Kathy Clark). Grandchildren Haven McVay; Ryan Fleming; Hope Pliske; Grace Huett; Parker Everett; Abigail Clark; Colton Clark, Jarod Walker, and Kendall Clark. Great-Grandchildren Maizy McVay, Mars McVay, and Delilah Clark. Sisters Betty Hood (Jack), Maggie Miller, and brother Jim Miller (JoElla). Nieces Lori Brown and Lisa Morgan, Nephew Lynn McCollum, and many more precious cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives. Granddog Ellie Mae Davis. And last but certainly not least, her church family. She was preceded in death and greeted in glory by her parents Raymond and Ruth Miller, sisters Lucille Wilson and Bobbie Adcock, and many other loved ones.

Mary Ruth Russell, of Maryville, TN passed away Sunday, July 26, 2026, at her residence at age 96. Mary had been under UT Hospice Care since April 23rd, 2024, due to Melanoma cancer. Mary was born in Monroe County, Vonore, Tennessee (in the mountains above Citico). Her parents were: Rev. William Riley Williams and Nora Bell Smith Williams. Mary's Dad served as pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Vonore, TN for many years. At 9 1/2 years old Mary accepted Jesus Christ, as her Savior, during the summer revival meeting. A young preacher, Rev. James Patton, preached the sermon, which convicted Mary's young heart to respond to the call of the Holy Spirit. When Mary was a teen, she had the opportunity to live in Alcoa, TN with her cousin, Nelda French Kidd, and her parents, Maternal Aunt Hettie & Uncle W.W. French, to be able to attend Alcoa City Schools, grades 8 - 12. Mary graduated from Alcoa High School, as did her future husband, Edward Gary Russell, of Alcoa. As teens, they first met at Central Baptist Church, Alcoa and had their wedding there in December 1950, when Ed was on leave, while serving in the U.S. Army. Ed and Mary remained active members of the church, while living in Alcoa. They moved to Bristol, TN in 1958, when Ed was hired at Raytheon Company, as a Draftsman, to design Missiles, for the US Navy. Ed was also transferred by the TN ARMY National Guards, as an Officer, to the Bristol TN unit. They became members of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church, Bristol, TN, and were able to take their young daughters, Sharon, and Teresa to the church, where they had an excellent children's program, and where the pastor, Rev. Willard Tallman, was a soul-winning, bible preaching man. In 1962, daughter Trish was born and, in 1964, the fourth daughter, Pam, was born. In 1973, God directed Mary, Ed and their children to move their memberships, to Euclid Ave. Baptist Church, Bristol, Virginia. This was the church where the entire family mature spiritually, under the younger pastor Dr. Rich Liner. Ed was a member of the church, until his death, in 1996. Mary remained a member of the church until after moving to Maryville, TN in 1998, where she would later join another Baptist Church, In town. Mary had lived in Bristol, TN for 40 years, so she prayed for God to direct her to the churches she should visit, before knowing that God wanted her to join Everett Hills Baptist Church, Maryville, TN. She stayed faithful to the church, until God sent her to her Childhood Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Vonore, TN. Mary was now in her 70’s and did not stop attending, until God told her it was OK to leave, when nearly 80-years-old. Mary always loved going to church seeing people accept Jesus, as their Savior. She was still able to drive her car, so she prayed for God to direct her to the right church for her to attend, that would be closer to her house. When the time was right, God revealed to Mary that she was to attend and later join, First United Methodist Church, Alcoa TN. She obeyed God and was faithful to the church, either by attending, and/or by giving her offerings, for a few years. The last time Mary attended a worship service at the church, was in July 2018 when Sharon attended the service with her. Mary always taught all four daughters to be obedient to God, and God’s Word. All four daughters accepted Jesus as their savior when they were around 9 years old. Mary's strong faith in God, and her genuine Love and Concern for her family, and other people, and has always influenced all four daughters to grow in their faith to become the mature Christian women, they are today. God blessed Mary with good health, during her long life. In 1983, Mary and Sharon went on a Holy Land/ Rome Italy Tour. In 1987, 1988, and 1991, Mary and Sharon were able to attend services at the Southern Baptist Conventions, and were able to see and hear well -known pastors and evangelists such as Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell, Adrian Rogers, and Charles Stanley. In 2013, 30 years after she first went to the Holy Land, Mary was still physically able to go on another tour to Isreal, with a different sponsor. Mary was also able to drive her car until she was 87 ½ years old. Mary worked one year, in Monroe County, Vonore, TN as a school teacher, at the mountain one-room schoolhouse, up above Citico (which is where Mary attended, as a child). This was in the 1950-1951 school year. From 1952 - 1953, Mary worked as a bookkeeper for the White Stores Grocery Chain, Knoxville, TN. 1954-1973, Mary was a stay home wife and mother. 1974 - 1976, Mary worked for Carmen's Dress Shop, Bristol TN .1977 – 1984, she worked for Miller's Dept. Store in Bristol Mall. 1984 – 1986, Mary was a babysitter for an infant/ toddler. 1986-1989, Mary was still caring for the toddler, and two of her grandsons. 1989 – 1991, Mary worked for Hess’s Dept. Store until she resigned in 1996 to take care of her ailing husband, Ed, until his death in 1996. Fall 1996 - June 1998, Mary was babysitting, part-time for another infant/ toddler. Fall 1998 - 2000, Mary worked part-time for HIS KID’S DAYCARE, owned by her daughter, Trish, HERE in Maryville. Sept. 1999- July 2005, Mary was the babysitter for her youngest grandson. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Edward Gary Russell. Parents: Rev. William Riley Williams, and Nora Bell Smith Williams. Fred Harris Raulston ended his walk on earth July 22, 2026. He was a devoted husband to Erma of 69 years, father to Linda Goins and Mike Raulston, daughter-in-law Tina Raulston, grandfather to Ashley Goins, Adam and Tiffany Ingram, Kyle and Sarah Ingram, and Taylor Ingram, great grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. Fred was a devout member of Nelson Chapel Church of Christ. He leaves a legacy of strength, storytelling, and devotion. Proceeded in death by his wife Erma Sue Heaton Raulston, his brothers Earl Raulston, Clayton Raulston, Frank Raulston, sisters Grace Raulston Webb and Emma May Raulston Bingham, and parents Wade Raulston and Clara Kagley Raulston. Fred taught many of us to just “be a man” by his example, leadership, and through daily conversations. He was one of the best storytellers and always told ALL of the story.

Gwenette Sue Rhea, age 65, passed away on July 19, 2026. She was proceeded by her mother Flotilla Morgan, her father Beecher Cornwell, and her husband Timothy Rhea. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose kindness and laughter touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. She cherished every moment spent with her loved ones and was always a source of comfort, joy, and encouragement. Sue loved her church family dearly and found great happiness in the relationships she built there. She enjoyed good food, watching her favorite soaps every day, and sharing laughter with those around her. She is survived by her step mother Sandie Clark, her sisters, Mona Poole, Daphne Jakubowski and Carol Cunningham, and her brother, Jay Cornwell. Her daughters: Emmeline Baker, Ariella Nichols, Tessa Carr, and Teleah Burns; Her grandchildren: Caleb Demastes, Jensen Jones, Benjamin Baker, Sawyer Baker, Kaiden Murphy, Keirsten Abbott, Natalie Nichols, Dean McAtee, Adalyn Richards, Jarryn Carr, Jaceyn Carr, Christopher Burns, Nichols Burns, Patrick Burns, and Oliver Burns; and her great-grandchildren, Ariabella Murphy, Beau and Waylon Burns. Sue’s memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the love she gave so freely. Her family will continue to carry her love, laughter, and strength with them always.

Edgar Sr. and Annabelle, and sister: Betty Carter. David is survived by his wife of 50 years: Mamie Edgar, brothers: John (Amy) Edgar, James Edgar, and Joe Edgar, sisters: Shirley Walker, Doris Heflin, and Teresa Lyday, and several nieces and nephews.

Jason Butler, 51 of Knoxville, TN, formally of Maryville, TN, passed away July 8, 2026. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Clara Faye and Harrison Moore. Jason leaves behind his parents: Gary and Lois Butler, his brother: Freddie, and his fur baby: Kitty Grey. Jason loved to volunteer to help animals in need. Jason was happiest when he was helping the disabled ones in his apartment complex. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He could make anyone laugh, and oh, what a wonderful smile our son had. Jason is at rest and at home now.

Paul Hawksley Krumm

Paul Hawksley Krumm, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on July 4, 2026, with his beloved wife, Catherine, by his side. Born on March 9, 1943, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica, New York, Paul was the son of the late Paul Krumm (2006) and Alma Hawksley Krumm (2002). He was raised in Utica, New York, where he attended Whitesboro High School and graduated with the Class of 1960. A gifted athlete, Paul earned varsity letters in four sports—football, baseball, basketball, and track—demonstrating the determination, teamwork, and work ethic that would define his life. Following in his father’s footsteps, Paul began a career with Niagara Mohawk as a groundman. Through hard work, he advanced to the position of Line Foreman, serving the company and its customers with pride throughout a 36-year career. After spending most of his life in Upstate New York, Paul retired in 1999 and relocated to Friendsville, Tennessee, where he enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and a well-earned retirement. Paul's first marriage was to the late Dale Haller Krumm. From that marriage came three children: Colleen Krumm Knight, Ryan Krumm, and Tyler Krumm. For the past 40 years, Paul shared a loving marriage with his wife, Catherine McKenna Krumm. Together they welcomed their daughter, Kendall, in 1989. Paul found his greatest happiness outdoors working in his yard, caring for his property, or simply enjoying nature. He had a lifelong love for animals, especially the many dogs that shared his home over the years. Paul was known for rescuing animals, and he devoted countless hours to raising orphaned raccoons and releasing them back into the wild. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Katherine McKenna Krumm; his children, Colleen Krumm Knight (Peter Knight), Ryan Krumm, Tyler Krumm (Jennifer Krumm), and Kendall Krumm; his three grandchildren; his sister, Geraldine Louise Conboy; his brother, Brian Krumm; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and neighbors who will miss him greatly. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Krumm and Alma Hawksley Krumm, and by his first wife, Dale Haller Krumm. His legacy of hard work, love of family, compassion for animals, and appreciation for the outdoors will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

James Douglas Weaver, aka Jim, Uncle Jim, and Daddy, was born on April 30, 1938 at the family home on the corner of Louisville Road and Dug Gap Road. For many years, if you said “Weaver’s Corner,” everyone in Louisville knew exactly where that was. He was the last of nine children born to Della Loy Weaver and Verlin Weaver. The story was that when he was born, he was dropped on his head. At least that’s what his older siblings always said. As you might imagine, being the youngest of nine children, “Jimmy,” as they called him, did get picked on. As a boy, he would walk in his sleep, and one night his brothers told him that his bicycle was in a tree, so he walked outside in his undershorts and climbed a tree to get it down. He remembers his oldest brother, Hanover, writing home from Europe during World War 2 asking for warm socks, as it was extremely cold up in the air on his missions as a tail gunner over Nazi-occupied Western Europe. He wore a lot of second-hand clothing, and he remembers getting his first new coat, purchased at Proffitt’s on the corner of Broadway and Cusick (where Bill Cox Furniture is now) when he was in the 4th grade. As a young boy, he would make a little extra money by mowing yards. Those were the days before power lawn mowers, and he remembers cutting one of the Louisville School teacher’s yards with a manual lawn mower for $4.00. He did graduate to a gas-powered mower for another neighbor’s yard, but the fee remained $4.00. He lived just down the road from Louisville School and walked to school everyday, except in 6th grade when he drove himself to school in his older brother’s A-model. In those days, when it snowed, there was no getting up and turning on the radio to see if classes in Blount County Schools were canceled. The bus drivers, one of whom was Moose Robinson, just put chains on their tires and made their rounds. Fun Fact: Moose was also Connie and Chrissy’s bus driver in middle school and high school. When Jim was in the 2nd grade, he remembers hearing a commotion up the road one day after school. He went to investigate and saw that the school building was on fire. He remembers seeing people throw chairs, desks, and books out the windows but doesn’t remember any fire trucks showing up. Of course, he and his classmates were excited because they thought “No School!” However, about two weeks later, school officials had put partitions up in the gym, which was separate from the school building on the hill behind it, and two grades met in each section. He remembers students throwing chalk over the partitions. While at Louisville School, Jim played basketball and baseball. He told stories of playing teams like Walland and Friendsville. His ragtag Louisville Warriors team especially enjoyed beating Friendsville, a team with more affluent players by the standards of the day. While at Louisville, it was hit or miss, unfortunately, when it came to high-quality educators. Some years he had a teacher that really made them buckle down, and other years, the teacher was just there to cash a paycheck. When Jim was in the 7th or 8th grade, he remembers Mr. Brooks asking him to drive him to Maryville to pick up some medicine, which he did. A lack of consistent quality educators caught up to him when he enrolled in Friendsville High School. However, he was not only ill-prepared for high school academically, but he was from a family of poor but hard-working farmers who couldn’t afford to buy him new school clothes. As a result, he said that some of the Friendsville “rich kids” made fun of the way he dressed. So, one day at the end of the first semester, he just got up and left school and walked back home up the railroad tracks between Friendsville and Louisville and never went back. At the age of 18, he started experiencing arthritis. He recalls not being able to bend down to tie his shoes, so his brothers had to do it for him. He went to a number of doctors and the one that finally did the trick told him to stop eating so much sugar, after which he recovered. At the age of 27, he finally settled down and married Joann Godfrey. Their first house was on North Union Grove Rd. Then they rented a house on Louisville Rd. from the Joneses. That’s where they lived when Connie was born. By approximately 1971, they had saved up enough money to buy the supplies to build a house back on Weaver’s Corner right behind his mom’s house. By this point, it was a family of four, as Chrissy had been born. He did the vast majority of the construction of the Weaver’s Corner house himself with the help of friends and family. This was a 2-bedroom house with a living room and a dine-in kitchen. An indoor bathroom came a year or two later. In the late 70’s or early 80’s, a den, another bedroom and a laundry room were added. In 1991, he decided to move away from Weaver’s Corner and made his final move to a 9-acre farm on Vinegar Valley Rd. in Friendsville. Throughout the years, Jim worked at, among other places, the Cotton Mill, Southern Cast Stone as a pattern maker, Candora Marble Company, at the University of Tennessee AG campus chicken farm as a maintenance worker, as a chauffeur for the Warners, and in maintenance at the Gateway Farm, a halfway house for troubled teen boys on Gravelly Hills Rd. in Louisville. There’s an old saying that goes, “Jack of all trades, master of none,” but Jim Weaver was a Jack of all trades and master of most of them. He was the “go-to” handyman for most of his friends and family for many years. Jim Weaver loved automobiles–the freedom they afforded to just get in and go, the challenge of restoring antique cars, and the competition they provided every Sunday in NASCAR. He was a loyal friend, “Uncle Jim” to many, a solid provider for his family, and the best dad ever. His family rarely went without–there was always enough food in the house, gas in the cars, and decent clothes to wear. The girls got an allowance of $5.00 a week based on doing chores around the house that they could spend however they wanted. As a Dad, Jim spent countless hours playing games both indoors and outdoors with his girls. He encouraged and enabled their hobbies: for Connie, it was helping to earn Girl Scout badges, which involved several knot-tying lessons and scouring the property for numerous leaf collections, or coming to any sporting event in which she was involved, whether it was as a player in 5th grade basketball, as the manager of the William Blount 9th grade girls basketball team throughout high school OR as a young adult on a Parks & Rec softball team. For Chrissy, it was facilitating her love of farm animals, especially horses. He built a horse barn for her at the Weaver’s Corner property and drove the horse trailer to numerous horse shows. He also allowed lambs to be kept inside the house in the bathroom at one point. He also facilitated her love of dachshunds, dog-sitting while she was at work or away on her travels. In general, he was a dad who made his girls behave and never tried to discourage their plans and dreams. Whatever they had in mind to do, he supported it and would lend a hand, if necessary. Jim always said when you run out of things to do, that’s probably a sign that the end is in sight. While he didn’t run out of things to do, he unfortunately ran out of the energy to do them. These last few years, and especially these last few months, have been challenging, and Jim definitely “did not go gently into that good night,” as the saying goes. Here’s one final story that most of us who knew Jim Weaver well can connect with. One evening, he called Connie and said that he and Momma had been driving to Knoxville on Alcoa Hwy when they saw a box fly off of a truck in front of them. They pulled over and retrieved the box. When they opened it up, there was a severed big toe inside of it. Connie was shocked and asked what they did with it. In true Jim Weaver style, he said, “We called the Big Toe Truck.” Most of his friends and family have the memory of Jim Weaver telling a great story, or pulling a harmless prank, or doing something silly that made us all just burst into laughter. We were all tremendously blessed to have him in our lives, and after we all get over the initial sadness of not having him around anymore, our memories of him will bring not sadness but gratitude, smiles and laughter.
