On Sunday August 19, 2018, Tom Buchanan passed away at age 90 and went to be with Jesus. Tom was born on May 25, 1928 in Happy Valley, TN to Greene and Dosha Buchanan. He and his wife Betty raised four daughters, Kaye, Teresa, Tracy and DeeAnna, and one son Tommy. Tom’s life was filled with service to others. He helped raise funds to construct East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. He and his best friend Bill Crisp raised $50,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital over a period of 20 years. He volunteered for 55 years at Blount County Action Agency packing food boxes for Meals on Wheels. Tom attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church as do most of his siblings and their families. Tom was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his never-ending gift of gab. He had an amazing memory of his youth and loved to, in great detail, tell stories of friends and family and the experiences they shared. Tom was one of the original founders of Smoky Mountain Raceway which brought NASCAR to Blount County. Tom was preceded in death by his father Greene, mother Dosha, wife Betty, daughter Kaye, brothers J.R., Joe and Luke, and best friend Bill Crisp. He is survived by longtime companion Hannah Wagner, daughters Teresa, Tracy and husband David, DeeAnna and husband Brian, son Tommy and wife Cindy, grandchildren Clint, Terri, Ben, Adam, Brooke and Abby, great-grandchildren Rossi and Henley, sisters Janice, Rosemary, Hope and Lorraine, brothers Bert, Asbury, Leonard and Googe, many in laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list, but not forgotten.
